Thailand runs two year numbers and two kinds of “week”. The solar calendar on your phone is real. The Buddhist Era stamp on a ticket, a school certificate, or a government form is also real. Lunar holy days move. Banks close hard. 7-Eleven does not. If you only packed the Gregorian grid, you will stand in front of a shuttered immigration window on a day your guidebook called Tuesday.
Buddhist Era is CE plus 543
Buddhist Era (BE) = Common Era + 543. A ticket, a park receipt, or a school banner stamped 2569 is 2026. The offset does not drift. You do not convert with a moon phase; you add or subtract 543.
Passports, airline tickets, and most hotel booking engines stay on CE. Thai official life — tax, schools, many museum captions, the newspaper masthead — often stays on BE. Read both. A “69” on a paper slip is not a typo for 1969.
New Year is split in practice. 1 January is a public holiday and a countdown like anywhere else. Songkran in mid-April is the traditional Thai New Year: family, temples, water. Chinese New Year is not a nationwide bank holiday in the same way, but in Yaowarat and in Phuket Town you will feel it as closed shops and packed restaurants. Do not assume a Tuesday in February is an ordinary working day in those districts.
The civil year is solar. Many religious observances are lunar. That is why a “fixed” festival in a 2019 blog is now on a different weekday, and why wan phra (Buddhist observance days) do not sit still on your Google Calendar unless you added them.
Lunar days, solar offices
Wan phra follows the lunar calendar — typically the quarter-moon days, four times a month. Neighbourhood wats fill with people making merit. White clothing shows up. Alcohol is not automatically illegal on every wan phra, but the major Buddhist holy days are dry for shops nationwide. Those are the ones that wreck a beer run.
The holy days that matter for a visitor’s fridge, not just their photos:
- Makha Bucha — full moon of the third lunar month; commemorates a gathering of disciples.
- Visakha Bucha — Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing, on the full moon of the sixth lunar month. The biggest of the set.
- Asarnha Bucha — first sermon, full moon of the eighth lunar month.
- Khao Phansa — start of the rains retreat, the day after Asarnha Bucha. Many young men still ordain around this window.
- Ok Phansa — end of the rains retreat, three lunar months later.
On those days, 7-Eleven will not sell you beer. Restaurants with a licence follow the same national pause. Staff will refuse politely. Arguing that you are a tourist is not a workaround. The drinks pillar spells the advertising and hours rules; do not expect this page to contradict Thai Beer & Spirits.
Banks, some museums, and government offices close on public holidays and often on substitution days when a holiday lands on a weekend. Temples are not “closed” so much as in ceremony — you can still go; you should not treat the ubosot as a gallery while a service is running. See Temple etiquette.
Songkran and Loy Krathong in 2026
Songkran 2026 is officially 13–15 April. That is the state holiday block. Cities, especially Chiang Mai, often run water for extra days on either side. Bangkok empties as people go home; islands and the remaining tourist streets fill. Roads and coaches are the worst of the year. The meaning is still family, elders, and a wat visit — the Super Soaker is the public face, not the whole rite. Full treatment: Songkran.
Loy Krathong 2026 falls on 24 November. It tracks the full moon of the twelfth lunar month. You float a krathong — banana-leaf (or, too often, styrofoam) float with flowers, incense, a candle — on river, khlong, or lake. In the north, Yi Peng lanterns overlap in Chiang Mai; they are related, not identical, and local rules on releasing lanterns change. Other days that move you even if you are not celebrating: Coronation and royal birthdays (stand for the anthem; do not treat the King’s image as a meme — the monarchy), Constitution Day, Labour Day, and the two New Years already named. Substitution Fridays and Mondays catch visitors who only checked the date, not the gazette.

Lunar dates other than Loy Krathong’s 24 November 2026 should be checked on a current Thai calendar before you plan a drinks evening around them. The holy-day names do not move; the Gregorian weekday does.
Opening hours versus ceremony
A government office on a holiday is shut. An immigration extension (about 1,900 THB for 30 days if you are on the visa-exemption stamp — Gateway has the entry rules on Visa & entry) will not happen on a substitution Monday because your app said “weekday”.
A wat on Visakha Bucha is the opposite of shut. It is the point of the day. Dress as you would on any visit: shoulders and knees, shoes off in the hall. The difference is crowd, white clothing, and less patience for a tripod.
A 7-Eleven sells rice boxes and Mama on holy days. It does not sell beer. The meal is still a meal; the fridge rules are on Table & Bazaar’s 7-Eleven meals.
Chinese-Thai districts around lunar new year, and some Isan towns around local rocket or boat festivals, will look closed when Bangkok looks open. National lists miss village calendars. If a bus terminates “because of the festival”, it is not being poetic.
How to read a Thai date without guessing
- If the year is 2500-something, subtract 543.
- If a festival is named in Pali-Sanskrit (Bucha, Songkran, Phansa), check whether it is lunar before you book a dinner that needs a bottle.
- If a bank is shut on a random Monday, look for a Sunday holiday the day before.
- If you are in a wat courtyard at dusk with incense smoke and a loudspeaker, you are in ceremony, not in a photography slot.
The calendar is not trying to be difficult. It is doing two jobs at once: a modern state that has to talk to airlines, and a Buddhist country that still counts moons. Read both clocks. Pack patience for the one that closed the counter.
